The Confederate command found that Lieutenant Swilling had interfered with an order to procure animals and ordered Jack to report to headquarters to explain his conduct. A few weeks later Swilling was reported deserted from Fort Fillmore, NM.

He wore his black hair long, sweeping about his shoulders, while his carriage was erect and commanding.
